Overview
Verkehrbox is a large-scale construction operations platform designed to help enterprise construction companies manage labor, materials, logistics, and payroll across multiple construction sites, all from a single, centralized system.
Over a multi-year engagement, our team partnered closely with the client to design and build Verkehrbox from the ground up, evolving it into a multi-tenant, role-based, cross-site operating system used by large construction firms to replace fragmented, manual workflows.
The Challenge
Large construction companies in Germany operate across dozens of active sites, involving:
- Hundreds of workers
- Multiple subcontractors and partner companies
- Shared materials and equipment
- Strict payroll, compliance, and time-tracking requirements
Before Verkehrbox, operations were fragmented across:
- Paper-based check-ins and manual attendance logs
- Excel sheets for payroll and material tracking
- Disconnected calendars per site or team
- Little to no real-time visibility into on-site activity
Core Problems
- No centralized view across sites, teams, and companies
- Manual labor tracking causing payroll errors and disputes
- Poor material visibility leading to loss and misallocation
- High coordination overhead for site managers and admins
- Systems not built for multi-company collaboration
As projects scaled, these inefficiencies became operational risks.
The Solution
Verkehrbox was designed as a construction operations OS — a single platform capable of managing people, time, materials, and workflows across companies and sites.
Key Design Principles
- Multi-tenant by default
- Role-based access and permissions
- Real-time data from the field
- Configurable workflows per company
- Built for long-running, complex construction projects
Platform Capabilities
1. Labor & Time Tracking
- Worker check-in / check-out via mobile devices
- Accurate time tracking per site, task, and company
- Centralized attendance records feeding payroll workflows
- Reduced reliance on manual logs and corrections
2. Payroll & Workforce Management
- Time data structured for payroll processing
- Clear attribution of hours across projects and employers
- Improved transparency for workers and admins
- Fewer disputes from missing or inconsistent records
3. Multi-Calendar Scheduling
Dedicated calendars for:
- Construction sites
- Teams
- Individual workers
- Visual labor planning for managers
- Reduced scheduling conflicts across projects
4. Material & Inventory Tracking
- Material check-in / check-out per site
- Visibility into stock movement and usage
- Shared inventory across companies on the same site
- Improved accountability and reduced loss
5. Multi-Company, Multi-Role Architecture
- Multiple construction companies operating in one platform
- Strict role-based permissions:
- Workers
- Site managers
- Company admins
- Platform super admins
Each company experiences customized views and workflows while collaborating on shared projects.
Technical Architecture
- Web + Mobile applications for field and office use
- Central API backend with multi-tenant data isolation
- Role-based authorization layer
- Scalable data models for long-running projects
Designed to support:
- High concurrency during shift changes
- Continuous data accumulation over multi-year projects
The platform evolved incrementally over several years, adapting to real-world construction workflows as complexity increased.
Implementation Process
Foundation Phase
- Core labor tracking and site management
- Early validation with real construction teams
Expansion Phase
- Payroll workflows
- Inventory and logistics tracking
- Advanced scheduling and calendars
Enterprise Scaling Phase
- Multi-company collaboration
- Customizable views and permissions
- Admin and super-admin tooling
This phased approach allowed Verkehrbox to grow into a mission-critical enterprise platform.
Results & Impact
Operational Outcomes
- Centralized visibility across sites, workers, and materials
- Reduced manual coordination for site managers
- Improved accuracy in labor tracking and payroll
- Real-time insight into on-site activity
- Scalable operations as projects grew
Business Impact
- Fewer payroll discrepancies
- Less time reconciling spreadsheets and paper logs
- Improved accountability across companies
- Stronger operational control
Why This Project Matters
Verkehrbox was not a simple CRUD application. It was a long-term, enterprise-grade system built to handle complex workflows, multiple companies operating simultaneously, field-first usage, and years of accumulated operational data.
Building and evolving this platform required deep domain understanding, architectural discipline, and the ability to scale both technology and product thinking over time.
